What is an Expansion Joint?

An expansion joint (also called a rubber bellows or flexible connector) is a pipe fitting designed to absorb thermal expansion, vibration, and movement in piping systems. Pipe expansion joints prevent stress on pipes, pumps, and connected equipment by providing flexibility where rigid connections would fail.

Rubber expansion joints for pipe systems use an EPDM or NBR rubber bellows element between metal flanges. The pipe rubber bellows absorbs axial compression and extension, lateral offset, and angular misalignment. What does a rubber expansion joint actually do?

A rubber expansion joint is a flexible connector fitted into rigid pipework to absorb vibration, take up thermal expansion and contraction, correct minor pipe misalignment, and reduce noise transmission. It protects pumps, valves and connected equipment from stress that would otherwise cause fatigue and leaks.

Single sphere, twin sphere or arch: which type do I need?

A single sphere joint handles most general pump and vibration duties. A twin sphere joint allows greater movement and offset, useful where more flexibility is needed. Arch (spool) types suit larger diameters and higher movement. Reducing joints change diameter and absorb movement in one fitting. Tell us the movement and pressure you need and we match the type.

Which rubber material should I choose?

EPDM suits water, hot water and many chemicals and is the common default. Neoprene is a good general-purpose option, NBR (Nitrile) resists oils and fuels, and Viton handles aggressive chemicals and higher temperatures. Hypalon and natural rubber are also available. Joints are supplied in sizes from DN25 to DN3500 with pressure ratings up to 25 BAR.

Do I need control rods?

Control rods limit the joint's extension and prevent over-elongation or blow-off on higher-pressure lines or where anchoring is limited. They are recommended where the system pressure could push the joint beyond its rated movement. We can supply joints with control rods, vacuum rings and sunshields as required.
